Block 1 (Friday)
1A Introduction to Numbers ~ Richele BaburinaForm IB in PNEU Programmes **Please note that no matter the form/grade assigned, in the study of mathematics children need to work at their own level of understanding.** In Charlotte Mason’s programmes, early elementary arithmetic lessons were called Numbers or Sums, referring to a child’s investigation of each number and the working out of small problems involving its use. In this workshop, experience an immersion in the first lessons of Number, where we will note a number of methods distinct throughout Mason’s principles of education. We will also learn the importance of mathematics in a Charlotte Mason classroom and how it can become an instrument for living teaching in your own.
1B Literature: Light for Life ~ Liz CottrillThe heart of instruction in a Mason education is living literature in nearly every subject, but the feast also includes the world’s great literature as its own subject throughout the 12 years of lessons. This workshop will discuss the progression of the presentation of poetry, fairytale, mythology, novels, Shakespeare, essays, and drama throughout the years, its scope and variety, purpose and plan for the knowledge of God, knowledge of man, and knowledge of the universe.
1C Poetry and Spiritual Formation ~ Art Middlekauff
Charlotte Mason wrote, “Poetry is, perhaps, the most searching and intimate of our teachers… Poetry, too, supplies us with tools for the modeling of our lives… As we ‘inwardly digest,’ reverence comes to us unawares…” Mason believed that poetry plays a crucial role in the spiritual formation of Christ’s disciples, young and old. In this hands-on workshop, we will interact with devotional poetry and reflect on its role in the home, church, and school.
1D Scheduling: A Home Schoolroom Managed on Sound Principles ~ Nicole Williams
Charlotte Mason gave us very specific guidelines for how a homeschool family’s daily schedule should run, including morning lessons and afternoon occupations. But for some, the idea of creating and following a schedule can be daunting. Join me as I show you how Mason’s plan allows for freedom and serenity in your day.
