Are you wondering who should come to this retreat?
Everyone should come to this soirée! Newbies as well as longtime practitioners. And did you happen to know that “soirée” is a French word meaning an intimate party or gathering for discussion and music? This retreat will have both! And in addition to this wonderful atmosphere, you will experience for yourself some of the delectable dishes that a Charlotte Mason education offers. You will leave the retreat rejuvenated and refreshed, and you will go forth in confidence with practical help in the “how to” of setting this feast before your children!
Why should I pay to go to a retreat?
Charlotte Mason says in Volume One (pp 2-3) about mothers, “And they will take it up as their profession–that is, with the diligence, regularity, and punctuality which men bestow on their professional labours. That the mother may know what she is about, may come thoroughly furnished to her work, she should have something more than a hearsay acquaintance with the theory of education…” Charlotte Mason is saying to be diligent to your professional labour! You have every reason to invest in continuing your own education. Public and private school educators must do so, and it is my belief that we as home educators are not exempt. Your children deserve a teacher who does not come to work with just a hearsay acquaintance with the theory of education but rather a teacher who comes thoroughly furnished! And YOU deserve a couple of days off from your regular duties so that you can recharge while equipping yourself!
Funny side note– My husband jokes with me about how I don’t think twice about spending money on going out to eat (insert here whatever extra fluff you waste money on) yet I dillydally over the decision to spend money on going to a retreat/conference that helps me with the education of our children! He speaks much truth!! That meal from the restaurant goes in the toilet in less than 12 hours 😉 but the education of my children lasts them a lifetime!
What if I don’t know much about Charlotte Mason?
I’m thrilled that you are interested in learning more about her philosophy. The freedom and peace I have experienced since implementing it in our home and homeschool have been nothing short of amazing! It will be well worth the time and effort to come to this retreat, and you will be learning from the best of the best in the Charlotte Mason community. I used to have SO many misconceptions about the Charlotte Mason method, but these misconceptions were based on blogs, books, and online information that I was reading. And most of it was INCORRECT. I am not sure why I didn’t think to “go to the source” and read about her philosophy using her own words (she wrote six original volumes about it), but now that I’ve started to read her first Volume and listen to the A Delectable Education podcast (a pure Charlotte Mason resource), I can see how grossly misinformed I was. I truly hope you haven’t experienced such misguidance as I have! But if you have, I highly recommend listening to the first 4 or 5 episodes of the ADE podcast before coming to the retreat. It will help you gain an introductory understanding of Charlotte Mason’s philosophy and aide you in being able to better grasp the things that will be presented during the retreat.
What if I’m a longtime practitioner of Charlotte Mason? Will this retreat be too basic for me?
Absolutely not! It will be perfect for you, too, because the Charlotte Mason method is like a beautiful hand dyed tapestry made of handspun wool. One strand doesn’t make a tapestry. One color of hand dyed wool doesn’t make the picture of the tapestry. It takes multiple strands and multiple colors lovingly handcrafted by the artisan to become a tapestry. You are the artisan for your children’s education, and by coming to this retreat, you will be honing your skills. A Charlotte Mason education has many layers like this South American handcrafted tapestry pictured below. So, yes, you should come to this retreat because there is always something else to be learned and implemented!
What will we be doing at the retreat?
Well, besides having an absolute BLAST…there are several things in which you will have the opportunity to partake. You will be able to attend Plenaries at the beginning and conclusion of each day. These are lectures that are presented to all attendees. You will also have various choices of Workshops that will be scheduled throughout the day. The Workshops are smaller sessions in which the speaker presents on the given topic. There will be time left for listeners to ask questions at the end. You will also have the opportunity each afternoon to choose from a variety of Immersions. An Immersion is a hands-on session where you will participate in the capacity of a student in order to learn how a subject or lesson is taught in the Charlotte Mason way. On the last day of the retreat, before the closing Plenary, you will have the chance to ask the speakers questions during the Panel Chat. We will also share snacks and meals together as this lends itself to wonderful impromptu discussions.
